Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality stands with Michael BennettSeptember 6, 2017
Jocelyn Benson, CEO of the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE), released the following statement about Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett’s encounter with police officers in Las Vegas:
“The revelation of Michael Bennett’s terrifying experience with Las Vegas police officers last month underscores the need to continue fighting against racial profiling and inequality. Throughout his career, Bennett has shown courage and leadership in addressing issues of racial injustice in our country, demonstrating how athletes have a unique opportunity and ability to shine light on critical issues to promote social change. At RISE, we are grateful for Bennett’s involvement in our work, particularly our most recent Super Bowl Town Hall, and his ongoing partnership and leadership. We have proudly partnered with professional athletes, teams and leagues to initiate programs that empower athletes to be leaders in addressing racial inequality and use sports to unite law enforcement with community leaders to build stronger and safer communities. Efforts such as these and continued leadership from athletes like Bennett can help our country move closer to racial equality.”
