COMPANY OVERVIEW

Founded in 2015 by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross, the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE) is a national nonprofit that educates and empowers the sports community to eliminate racial discrimination, champion social justice and improve race relations. Through partnerships and programs, we inspire leaders in sports to create positive change on matters of race and equality.

POSITION SUMMARY

As a RISE intern and participant in the Summer 2019 RISE Internship Program you will contribute to RISE’s work promoting social advocacy through sports. Your responsibilities will vary by department and are detailed below. All interns will complete project-based work in collaboration with employees in several departments across the organization. The Summer 2019 RISE Internship Program will include professional development events and support, including mentorship, connection and collaboration with fellow interns, and additional developmental programming including an orientation and goal-setting.

Compensation and Logistics

All internship positions will be paid at $17/hr. Candidates will work 40 hours per week during the regular business hours of RISE. Interns in New York City may receive additional compensation in the form of housing or travel stipends. This internship is scheduled to start June 4th and end on August 23rd. Based on significant circumstances, alternative dates may be considered for interns that need to start or end on different dates.

COMMUNICATIONS, EVENTS & MARKETING (NEW YORK)

The Communications, Events & Marketing team at the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE) brings RISE’s mission and partnerships to life through innovative programming, experiences and storytelling. The team works with our professional, collegiate, community and media partners to successfully create, execute and promote meaningful programs that inspire leaders in sports to create positive change on matters of race and equality.

This role is seeking an out-of-the-box thinker and creative problem-solver who will support all aspects of RISE communications, events, programming and marketing efforts. The intern will gain exposure in content development, partnership building, implementation of marketing and branding strategies, budget management and evaluation of all RISE’s programs in our space. In addition, the intern will gain practical experience in both traditional and digital media through the creation of content, copy and research for various RISE platforms, events and partners. This position will work closely with the RISE staff and external partners to drive our commitment to racial equity and social justice.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Assist with creation of digital content and copy, including for social media, website, podcast, media advisories, press releases and marketing materials
  • Draft event management communications including: project plans, run-of-show and recap documents
  • Assist with the planning, coordination and execution of RISE events and/or programming
  • Revamp and innovate the archive management process for all event documents, creative elements and digital content
  • Monitor media coverage of RISE and related topics to assist in compiling daily reports
  • Organize and update database of media and partner contacts and social media handles
  • Assist in identifying innovative ways for RISE to deliver content to new and existing audiences
  • Research and identify opportunities to pitch stories of RISE’s work and impact to digital, print and broadcast media
  • Assist with the creation and procurement of event assets and signage
  • Assist in the development of marketing strategies and assets to promote RISE experiences and programs
  • Support with onsite event management and setup as necessary
  • Manage event hardware and inventory processes
  • Lead on-boarding and procurement of temporary event staff
  • Help to track and process event invoices and vendor payments
  • Contribute to the evolution of RISE events and outreach through an internship project: drive partner engagement through unique experiences and events/programming

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Demonstrated previous internship or leadership experience
  • Interest in the Sports and nonprofit sector; media, experiential marketing or event production
  • Ability to work with diverse communities and on diverse teams of staff or volunteers
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks effectively
  • High level of attention to detail, strong work ethic and professionalism
  • Familiarity with and understanding of social media outreach for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms
  • Comfortable working independently as well as part of a team
  • Active problem solver
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent writing, research, and communication skills

LEADERSHIP & EDUCATION (NEW YORK)

The Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE) Leadership & Education team (L&E) works with athletes, coaches and administrators at every level to equip them with the knowledge and skills to stand up against racism and advance the conversation around race relations. With sports being central to all that we do, participants learn about the history of race and sports, its power to drive change and how they can become leaders in their teams, schools and communities.

The NYC-based Leadership & Education intern will be a key contributor to the RISE and L&E team. This position will take on several tasks and projects focused on the development and execution of leadership and education programs, including internal and external collaboration and relationship management, supporting multi-week programs and single-session workshops, and developing RISE resources. The NYC-based Leadership & Education intern will also be asked to contribute to the department’s curriculum development, evaluation, and data analysis and management efforts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • In collaboration with RISE staff and partners, lead the start-to-finish planning and execution of one RISE Leadership & Education single-session workshop or event in Summer 2019
  • In collaboration with Director, Leadership & Education, create comprehensive RISE report focusing on analysis of cumulative RISE work involving police and youth interaction
  • Complete training with RISE Leadership & Education staff for familiarization with curriculum and to prepare to facilitate programs
  • Support planning and execution of RISE Leadership & Education programs and workshops by providing administrative support as necessary, including materials and document preparation, data collection, entry, and management, and other tasks as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • The capacity to work on multiple tasks and projects with attention to detail, prioritize a challenging workload, being well organized and dependable, positive and solution-oriented
  • Good problem-solving skills with a willingness to be flexible and proactive in a fast-paced and challenging work environment

LEADERSHIP & EDUCATION (DETROIT)

The Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE) Leadership & Education team works with athletes, coaches and administrators at every level to equip them with the knowledge and skills to stand up against racism and advance the conversation around race relations. With sports being central to all that we do, participants learn about the history of race and sports, its power to drive change and how they can become leaders in their teams, schools and communities.

The Detroit-based Leadership & Education intern will be a key contributor to the RISE and L&E team. This position will take on several tasks and projects focused on the department’s curriculum development, evaluation, and data analysis and management efforts. This will include support of survey design and development, creation and refinement of analytical reports, and input on RISE curriculum and program content. The Detroit-based Leadership & Education intern will also be asked to contribute to the development and execution of leadership and education programs, including internal and external collaboration and relationship management, supporting multi-week programs and single-session workshops, and developing RISE resources.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • In collaboration with RISE staff and partners, lead the start-to-finish planning and execution of one RISE Leadership & Education single-session workshop or event
  • Assist in the creation of RISE curriculum, including editing, formatting, and packaging of RISE educational modules
  • In collaboration with Senior Director, Leadership & Education, create comprehensive RISE report focusing on analysis of cumulative RISE work involving colleges and universities
  • Support analysis of impact of RISE Leadership & Education work via data analysis of RISE data, including analysis of trends across different programs, locations, and audiences
  • Complete training with RISE Leadership & Education staff for familiarization with curriculum and to prepare to facilitate programs
  • Support planning and execution of RISE Leadership & Education programs and workshops by providing administrative support as necessary, including materials and document preparation, data collection, entry, and management, and other tasks as needed

PARTNERSHIPS (NEW YORK)

The Partnerships team is responsible for establishing and managing RISE’s engagement with professional sports leagues, universities, and professional athletes in achieving our mission. Our Partnerships intern will be largely working on our RISE to Vote program.

RISE to Vote is our nonpartisan initiative that partners with sports teams, conferences, community groups, and leagues to improve civic engagement in our nation. RISE to Vote educates professional and collegiate athletes on how to vote and why it matters, empowers them by amplifying their platform, and facilitates engagement with their fans. The right applicant will have a self-starter attitude, experience managing multiple projects simultaneously, and a deep commitment to racial equity and social justice.

This position may take on a number of diverse tasks related to non-profit program management, including communications and marketing, fundraising, and partnership development. The ideal candidate would be interested in learning more about civic engagement, racial equity, and social advocacy in sports.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Draft toolkits that partners can use to educate their athletes on civic engagement and empowers them to get registered to vote
  • Manage and maintain a 2019 and 2020 calendar of events that show important election dates and timeframes to best engage our partners in different sports
  • Manage and maintain an athlete engagement database to track, identify, and engage professional athlete ambassadors
  • Conduct basic research on pressing racial justice, civic engagement, and sports matters that informs Partnerships strategy and implementation
  • Support partnership development by managing key relations with nonprofit organizations and athletic partners
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to develop communication and marketing materials that encourage fans to vote
  • Implement systems and processes to collect and track feedback from participants and partners at our events and programs

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous internship or leadership experience required.

STRATEGY/CEO (NEW YORK)

This position will have the unique opportunity to work and collaborate with senior leadership on decision making and the alignment of business unit plans to RISE’s goals and strategic priorities. In this development-oriented position, she/he will work closely with the CEO, Special Assistant, Strategy and VP of Finance and Administration. This individual will assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining special projects and initiatives specific to the CEO’s agenda.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Works closely with CEO and Special Assistant, Strategy on monthly board emails and updates
  • Organizes internal shared folder system with support from interns from Communications, Events and Marketing, Partnerships and Leadership and Education Teams

  • Draft Grant Proposal template /Fundraising Support
  • Support VP of Finance and Administration with organizational bookkeeping
